Q: I’m thinking of opening my practice with a partner…do you recommend it?  A: Never! Q: I’ve heard that the only way to start a practice today is as an Independent Contractor…is this true?  A: This is a very common rumor in the chiropractic profession. It is not the least bit true. 55% of all The Practice Starters® Program clients start their own solo practice. They do not start as an Independent Contractor. However, 25% of the Practice Starters® doctors do start as an Independent Contractor. Both types of doctors are actually starting a practice; one of them opens his practice in an office suite that is owned by a landlord, the other one opens his practice in an office suite owned by another chiropractor or a medical doctor. They still have to follow all the right steps of starting a practice.

Q: I’m thinking of becoming an Independent Contractor…can you help me with this?  A: Absolutely. Approximately 25% of our Practice Starters® clients start a practice by becoming an Independent Contractor.
Starting a practice as an Independent Contractor is the less expensive way of starting a practice; however, it is fraught with dangers. It has been estimated that 95% of all Independent Contractor relationships end within 2 years. There is a good reason for these break-up percentages – most Independent Contractor agreements are written in favor of the doctor who owns the office and takes advantage of the doctor who is the Independent Contractor. With The Practice Starters® Program guidance, we don’t allow this to happen to our clients.

Q: What is the advantage of joining The Practice Starters® Program vs joining a franchise?  A: The advantages of a franchise is that it has an extremely structured way of starting a practice. The doctor who joins a franchise has no option but to follow the instruction of the franchise company. The exact same structured starting format is the basis of The Practice Starters® Program. If a doctor will follow the format outlined by The Practice Starters® Program, they will succeed just as much as a doctor who joins a franchise.
However, the big difference between a doctor who joins The Practice Starters® Program and a doctor that joins a franchise is the doctor who joins a franchise has to pay a percentage of his or her practice income for 10 years, or longer. Q: Do you recommend I become an associate before I open my own practice?  A: It depends. If you are unsure of yourself as far as your adjusting ability, your belief in chiropractic, or you lack confidence, you should become an associate in order to increase your confidence level. These are the only valid reasons to become an associate. As you know, most associate positions are very negative experiences on the part of the associate. You’ve heard the term, the “associateship from hell” … this describes most associate relationships. However, if you can find an exceptional doctor to work for … one that will train you on how to become an exceptional doctor … then an associate position is worth it. Dr. Fernandez, the founder of The Practice Starters® Program and Dr. Dianne Fernandez, the president of The Practice Starters® Program were both associates and had great associateship experiences. However, a great associateship relationship is rare … perhaps 5% of all associate relationships are successful. If you have confidence in yourself and are able to diagnose and adjust patients, start your own practice. Most associateships will result in you picking up the bad habits of the person that is offering the associate position. The Practice Starters® Program has extensive classes on associateships and Independent Contractor positions because most of the time an offer of an associate position is, in reality, not an associateship; it is an Independent Contractor relationship. Most Independent Contractor relationships are when a doctor who is not doing well in practice wants a new doctor to come in and build a practice within his practice. This doesn’t work! If a location isn’t good enough to fill up one doctor, how will it fill up two?

Q: I am a student in chiropractic college…can I join now?  A: Absolutely. We recommend students join The Practice Starters® Program just prior to going into the student clinic so they can take the additional ‘student’ classes we have in Phase 1 of The Practice Starters® Program and use that knowledge in the student clinic to get their student requirements met. Q: What if I join The Practice Starters® Program, but don’t open my practice and I take an associate position or an Independent Contractor position?  A: The cost for The Practice Starters® Program is only $99 a month for 25 months. If a doctor becomes an associate, he continues to pay the $99 per month, and at the same time, learns many of the Practice Starters® procedures so that when he decides to open his own practice, he will be ready. If the doctor becomes an Independent Contractor, he still follows all the Practice Starters® procedures. An Independent Contractor relationship is nothing more than starting a practice in another doctor’s office. It is still starting a practice and all the same practice starting rules and concepts apply.

Q: Can you help me become a success with my adjusting technique?  A: The Practice Starters® Program doesn’t require that any specific adjusting techniques be used in a chiropractic practice. Your adjusting technique is your decision. We have many successful doctors who use upper cervical techniques, soft tissue techniques, physiotherapy, straight chiropractors, etc. The Practice Starters® Program is the most successful practice starting program in the profession regardless of the doctor’s adjusting technique.

Q: Can The Practice Starters® Program start a low overhead practice?  A: Absolutely. It is always our objective to start a low overhead practice. Once a doctor hits net profit then he or she has the option to spend more money, or increase their overhead. But that is their option. Q: How much income can I expect to make if I join The Practice Starters® Program?  A: We have had doctors earn $98,600 their first 30 business days in practice. The average Practice Starters® doctor earns $250,000 his or her first year in practice. If you have more ambition than the average person, you will earn more. Q: How long after I join The Practice Starters® Program will I be able to open my practice.  A: that depends upon a number of factors… Are you joining The Practice Starters® Program while in college? If so, it will be many months before you will open your practice. If you have already graduated from college and know the state and town in which you will practice, this will shorten the amount of time it takes to open your practice. However, typically from the time you find your office site and get your bank loan, it will take 3 to 4 months to open your practice. The amount of time depends upon how much time your contractor needs to remodel your office space. If you find an office space that does not need to be remodeled, then you can get into practice sooner. But, the typical doctor, once he finds his office site and gets his bank financing, will take 3 to 4 months before he opens his office.

Q: How long is The Practice Starters® Program?  A: The Practice Starters® Program will guide you from the time you join until you open your practice. Phase 10 of the program contains a  six month checklist of all the activities you should do in the first 6 months after your practice is open. You will have access to Phase 10 of the program for six months after you open your practice, but the access to The Practice Starters® Specialists stops once you open your doors. Q: If I stop the program, can I restart where I left off?  A: Absolutely. Once you finish a phase and you check off the checklist at the end of that phase, you have completed that phase. Then, if you drop out for a month or so, all you have to do when you join back is to begin the next phase of instructions.

Q: Can my spouse help me with parts of the program?  A: Absolutely. We recommend that your spouse help you as much as possible. There is a lot of research that needs to be done and we recommend that your spouse do it for you. You, the doctor, are going to be very busy studying your office procedures, negotiating with landlords, talking to advertising representatives at the newspaper, meeting people, etc. There is a substantial portion of The Practice Starters® Program that can be delegated to your spouse.

Q: When I hire a CA will he or she have access to the CA training videos in The Practice Starters® Program?  A: Absolutely. We recommend doctors start their practices with a CA. We thoroughly train the doctor and the CA at the DrFernandez.com seminars and through The Practice Starters® Program so that when the doctors open their doors, their CA is well trained.

Q: Can I jump ahead in the program if I already know the city and state I want to practice in?  A: Yes and No. The Practice Starters® Program is separated into 10 phases. Picking a state and town is covered in phase 2. If you have already chosen your state and town, that portion of phase 2 has been completed. However, there is a lot of other work to be done in phases 1 & 2 and you have to do all those activities also.

Q: Can I attend the DrFernandez.com seminars while I’m a member of The Practice Starters® Program?  A: Absolutely. You, your spouse and your CA can attend all the DrFernandez.com seminars absolutely free until the time you open your practice. These seminars are optional and we recommend you attend these seminars if you live close to where these seminars are held.

Q: Can I share what I have learned with my friends?  A: Absolutely not. The Practice Starters® Program is strictly for you since you are paying for it. There are severe financial penalties for doctors who share any part of The Practice Starters® Program with their friends. It is not fair to share the Practice Starters® material with your friends and have them do The Practice Starters® Program procedures in a town in which another Practice Starters® client is opening. In this case, you would hurt your fellow Practice Starters® clients. The Practice Starters® Program will not allow this.

Q: What is the Special Student Program?  A. Our Special Student Program is a series of 13 bonus instructional video classes. These classes are in addition to the instructions of Phase 1 of the Practice Starters Program. Q: Why are students restricted to Phase 1 of The Practice Starters Program?  A. The students are restricted to Phase 1 for a many reasons:
  1. There is a lot of work to be done in Phase 1 that must be completed before moving on to Phase 2.
  2. While you are in Chiropractic College we want you to focus your attention on learning to be the best chiropractor you can be. We advise you to concentrate your efforts on completing your clinic requirements, graduating from college and pass your state boards – then shift your focus onto what states and towns you may wish to practice in and whether or not those states and towns are ‘HOT or COLD’ areas in which to start your practice.
  3. You will want to double check your state laws pertaining to the practice of chiropractic because these laws can change with each legislative session. You want the most recent information before progressing to Phase 2 of our program.
  4. We at The Practice Starters Program strongly suggest throughout our program that you ‘do first things first’. In other words, we want you to focus your attention on the most important tasks to be completed in each phase of starting a practice as they come up and not get distracted by anything else.

Q: What is the difference between the ‘special’ student program and the regular program?  A: All of our doctors will receive the regular Practice Starter Program in its entirety. Our student doctors will receive additional content that will help them improve their student clinic practice, networking, credit worthiness and diagnostic skills. This additional content is available to student doctors prior to six months before graduation.

Q: I am within 6 month of graduating chiropractic college – why can’t I have access to the additional ‘student’ instruction?  A: If you are within 6 months of graduation you will not have enough time to complete the instructions in the additional ‘Student’ program. You now need to focus all of your attention onto the regular instructions on Phase 1… There is a lot of work to do.
